We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical body horror, but within Together exists a intense examination about our choices in loving one another.
A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The narrative commences when the couple move from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
The couple confront the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
