The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
