Scream OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Franchise with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This latest installment marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a character you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that kept me up at night," Lillard admits.
A Triumphant Return for Fallen Favorites
It has been established that three distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the return of the endearing and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a dream come true, even if he is terrified about the public's reaction. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he received the offer from the series creator.
"I recall the phone call. I recall the small talk. I remember him posing the question. That instance is permanently etched on my mind," he says. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the final product. He confesses to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved franchise.
"It's either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Theories and Excitement Run High
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are somehow all alive in a strange communal scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of earlier genre films, also is on the table.
Audiences will discover the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
