The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
