A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block visible behind assisted us verify the video.
We are checking video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the location of where the pictures were from relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
