French authorities will start stopping small boats in English Channel following UK pressure
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the Channel, after months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have rarely acted to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson says officers will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a major step forward, following a brief change towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous government official left government.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a summit between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Now French authorities will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking methods to adjust to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
