A Standout Year for Launching The Orb
The essence of soccer eluded me before I viewed a match with my father. It happened while I was staying to my parents' house in the middle of the World Cup frenzy. Italy was competing, and that carried immense weight to my father, an expatriate from the Abruzzo region. Despite the fact that I consistently thought the game dull, his energy was so contagious that it held my attention to the screen. The puzzle pieces clicked that day, immediately perceiving all the captivating nuances the pastime had to offer and embracing its deep-seated meaning. I felt it was vital that my father's team win the match.
It's challenging to explain the allure of sports to those who don't get them. You need to live through that epiphany where everything clicks for yourself — or, at the very least, you need an enthusiastic teacher on hand to demystify the complex mechanics and showcase the core essence of the endeavor. Evidence from this year shows that this is something a digital title can accomplish. This year gave us three superb soccer games that dissected the game in very different, user-friendly ways.
The Heartfelt Narrative: Despelote
The most significant piece of that trifecta is Despelote. This indie game is a coming-of-age narrative set in Ecuador. Superficially, it's a fairly standard story about a child growing up in the 2000s and finding his voice. However, all of this occurs against the setting of an all-consuming historic moment: The country's team has made it for the World Cup, and it is the paramount thing happening in the protagonist's lives. Matches are on every storefront window. They're broadcast during family events. It's the sole topic anyone can discuss. The sport is everything.
Against this backdrop, we follow the game's protagonist develop. He isn't only navigating where he fits in at a social gathering, but where he belongs within his culture as well. The beautiful game is inseparable from his sense of self, and it's through the game that he uncovers himself as a devoted Ecuadorian. No game has gotten closer a video game has ever come to allowing me to comprehend my own father and the reason he was so captivated to the World Cup all those years ago.
The Athletic Core: Rematch
Where Despelote focuses on the societal weight of soccer, two other titles from this year encapsulate the nuances of the game itself in more engaging ways than FIFA-style simulators. Rematch, the most recent game from the developers behind Sifu, explores the raw physicality of soccer. This multiplayer game breaks down the sport by turning it into a fast-paced skirmish played between few players. It draws cues from titles like Rocket League to create an pick-up-and-play match that's focused on tight teamwork and precise possession.
My summer was consumed with Rematch for a few weeks this summer. It appeared easy during my initial sessions, but with each match I picked it up, I found more depth. Beyond simple passes and shots, I figured out how to feint around opponents to sidestep a challenge. I perfected how to drop the ball to stop someone from taking possession. I practiced my tricks until I could transform a stylish move into a legitimate defensive tactic. These myriad little tricks gave me insight into soccer in ways I wouldn't have been able to appreciate as a casual viewer. I came out with a deeper understanding for the central part physical mastery plays in the game, acknowledging what a incredibly skilled pursuit it truly is.
The Strategic Mind: Pup Champs
If Rematch showcased the physical dimension of soccer, Pup Champs playfully explored the cerebral side. The newest game from the team behind Golf Peaks, Pup Champs is a turn-based football strategy title featuring puppies. Every challenge requires you to navigate a few pups on a field and kick the ball into a goal. Simple enough, but the challenge stems from the fact that each dog has a specific kick pattern, they can only move a limited number of squares, and there are obstacles to contend with. Completing a stage requires smart planning and a firm grasp of the field. It feels like you're coaching a high school soccer team, drawing up the perfect plays to steer your pups to victory. This isn't a simulation interpretation of the game by any means, but it's a wonderful companion piece to Rematch.
The Future of Sports Games
Of course, there were also plenty of releases about soccer, as expected. Annual franchises arrived right on schedule and beloved management sims made their much-hyped comeback. Yet, thanks to these particular titles, I spent 2025 pondering soccer more than I have since. Games gave me a window into the sheer athleticism that goes into a sport I'll probably never be proficient in (too much running!) and understand why soccer holds importance to so many people. This represents a notable gaming trend I would love to see persist, with more innovative approaches to athletic titles that seek to communicate the spirit of a game rather than copying it exactly. Furthermore, a couple of games succeeded in this for other athletic pursuits this year, whether it was the open-world biking journeys of Wheel World or the surreal trip of Skate Story. Even if you don't typically enjoy sports, there are more and more games out there that are ready to welcome you to the fold.
